How to Compare Reels of Different Ages

Compare Reels of similar age when you want to understand relative performance. A month-old video has had more time to accumulate views than one published yesterday. FeedRama’s exported dates and available metrics can help you organize the comparison, but a single snapshot does not reveal each video’s full growth curve.

Choose an observation rule

Decide whether you are studying lifetime totals or performance after a fixed amount of time. Both can be useful, but they answer different questions. A lifetime ranking highlights accumulated distribution; a fixed observation window is better suited to comparing the early results of your own tests.

For competitor research, you may only have today’s counts. State that limitation instead of claiming you know what each post achieved in its first day.

Build age groups before ranking

GroupUseful comparison
Recently publishedEarly indicators, with limited confidence
Similar publication periodMore comparable exposure time
Older evergreen postsAccumulated long-term distribution
Unknown dateSeparate until the date is verified

Use the post’s publication date, not its position in the grid. Pinned content and presentation order can be misleading. Keep Instagram Reels separate from photos with no comparable view metric.

Use exports as snapshots

After installing FeedRama, collect a suitable Reels sample and export available post data where access permits. Add the collection date yourself, then verify publication dates for the posts you intend to compare.

The Instagram sorter uses a count scope on Reels. Missing timestamps should remain unknown. Keep the original export unchanged and do calculations in a copy.

Do not turn views per day into a growth forecast

Dividing lifetime views by age in days gives a rough average across the post’s lifetime. It does not tell you yesterday’s views or predict tomorrow’s growth. Short-form distribution can be uneven, and a recent resurgence can be hidden by the average.

For your own tests, record counts at consistent intervals going forward. For a historical competitor sample, use a cautious conclusion such as “higher total views among posts from this period.” Pair that with qualitative Reel review before deciding what to try.

Frequently asked questions

Should I compare a new Reel with an old one?

You can compare lifetime totals, but recognize the different observation time. For early-performance questions, use similar post ages or a fixed follow-up window.

Does an export show historical daily views?

A post-data snapshot contains the available values at collection time. It does not reconstruct a daily history.

Is views per day a forecast?

No. Dividing lifetime views by age is only a rough average and does not describe the shape of the growth curve.

What if a publication date is missing?

Keep it unknown and verify it on the source post before including it in an age-based comparison.

What should I do for my own content tests?

Record metrics after consistent observation periods and retain dated snapshots so the comparison can be reproduced.
