Pinned Instagram Posts and Sorting: What Changes?

A pinned Instagram post’s place at the top of a profile does not establish its publication date or performance rank. When researching an account, distinguish the creator’s profile presentation from the ordering of a collected sample. FeedRama can sort retrieved posts by a supported metric or Oldest, but the collection scope still determines what you can conclude.

Try the workflow in Chrome

Use FeedRama on a supported Instagram or TikTok page, and check the available range and actions in your account.

Treat the native grid as presentation

A creator may choose to highlight an introduction, announcement, or evergreen reference. Its prominent position is a presentation choice, not proof that it is the newest, oldest, or most popular item. Open the post to inspect its date and content.

For a brand review, the pinned set can be useful evidence of the message the creator wants new visitors to see. Record that observation separately from your engagement analysis.

Choose the ordering your question needs

QuestionEvidence to use
What does the profile emphasize?Visible presentation and pinned content
What is the earliest retrieved post?Publication dates with Oldest
What received the most likes?Like counts in a documented sample
What received the most Reel views?Reels view counts in a documented sample

The same post can matter for several reasons. Keep those reasons explicit instead of calling everything near the top of a profile a “top-performing post.”

Run a chronological check

  1. Install FeedRama from the Chrome Web Store in desktop Chrome, then reload the Instagram or TikTok tab.
  2. Open the profile’s Posts tab and choose a suitable scope.
  3. Select Oldest, run the collection, and read its status.
  4. Open the earliest result and compare the actual publication date with any pinned posts you noted.

See the date-sorting guide and the Instagram sorter. The earliest item in a limited sample is not automatically the account’s first upload.

Keep two views in your research notes

Use one section for “profile presentation” and another for “collected performance.” In the first, note what a new visitor sees and what message it conveys. In the second, list the metric, scope, result count, and collection date.

This is particularly useful before a rebrand or product launch: the highlighted content may tell an intentional story while recent performance shows a different pattern. Use competitor research to compare those observations without implying that a pinned position caused engagement.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pinned post always the newest post?

No. Its position is not sufficient evidence of publication date. Open it and inspect the date.

Is a pinned post the most popular post?

Not necessarily. Compare available engagement counts within a clearly defined sample.

Does sorting change the creator’s pins?

FeedRama presents a sorted browser view. It does not publish changes to the creator’s account layout.

Can Oldest identify the first-ever post?

Only the collected coverage can support an earliest-available finding. Missing or removed history remains a limitation.

Should pinned posts be excluded from research?

Not automatically. Include or exclude them based on your question, and document the choice rather than silently changing the sample.
